Product Tags
Listify reads a small set of reserved product tags straight from Shopify. You add them the same way you add any other tag, and they take effect on your storefront immediately, with no setting to switch on inside the app.
There are two families:
- Exclusion tags keep a product out of registries and wishlists entirely.
- Behaviour tags leave the product available, but change how it works once a customer adds it.
Adding a tag
- In your Shopify admin, go to Products and open the product you want to change.
- Scroll to the Tags field in the right-hand column.
- Type the tag exactly as written in this guide, then press Enter.
- Click Save.
To tag many products at once, select them from the Products list and choose Add tags from the bulk actions bar.
Type tags in lowercase. The storefront button checks tags exactly as you typed them, so
Listify:No-Registrywill not be recognised wherelistify:no-registryis. Shopify preserves whatever casing you enter, so it is worth checking an existing product before assuming a tag is active.
Exclusion tags — hiding a product
Use these for products that should never end up on a gift registry or a wishlist: gift wrap, shipping protection, deposits, warranty add-ons, sale-final clearance, or anything you cannot reliably restock.
| Tag | Effect |
|---|---|
listify:no-registry | Hidden from gift registries. Still available for wishlists. |
listify:no-wishlist | Hidden from wishlists. Still available for gift registries. |
listify:no-lists | Hidden from both. |
What happens once a product is excluded
The tag is enforced everywhere a customer could otherwise reach the product:
- The Add to Registry and Add to Wishlist buttons stop rendering on the product page.
- The product no longer appears in the product picker inside the registry and wishlist widgets, including search results and recommended products.
- If the product is already on someone's list, it is hidden from that list from then on, and it stops counting toward the list's item count and gifting progress.
That last point is what makes the tags safe to apply retroactively. You do not need to hunt down existing registries after tagging a product.
Using Shopify's seo.hidden metafield instead
If you already hide products from search engines and storefront search using Shopify's seo.hidden metafield, Listify honours it too and treats it exactly like listify:no-lists. Any non-zero value counts as hidden.
Two things worth knowing:
- Listify never creates this metafield definition. If you do not already use it, use the tags above instead. They are simpler and need no setup.
- If you do use it, Listify automatically grants the definition read access for your storefront the next time the app loads, which is what lets the widgets see it. The product page buttons respect it either way.
Behaviour tags — changing how a product works
These tags do not hide anything. They pre-configure how a product behaves the moment a customer adds it to a registry.
| Tag | Effect |
|---|---|
listify:unlimited | The item has no target quantity. It never reaches "fully gifted" and is left out of the registry's gifting progress. |
listify:all-variants | The gift-giver chooses the variant at purchase time, from all of the product's variants. |
listify:unlimited
Best for products where any number is welcome and a target quantity would be misleading: charitable contributions, honeymoon fund line items, consumables, or a "buy them a bottle of wine" entry.
The registrant can still see and manage the item normally. It simply never shows a "3 of 5 gifted" style target, and it cannot block the registry from reaching completion.
Stock still applies. An unlimited item is capped by whatever inventory you actually have available in Shopify.
listify:all-variants
Best for products where the registrant should not have to commit to a size or colour on the giver's behalf, such as apparel the recipient will choose themselves, or a product whose variants are purely a matter of taste.
When the registrant adds the product, the variant they picked is kept only as the image and label shown on the card. The gift-giver picks the real variant when they buy it.
Both tags apply at the moment a product is added
This is the most important thing to know about the behaviour tags.
They are read once, when a customer adds the product to their registry. Adding or removing a tag afterwards never rewrites items that registrants already hold, because those settings are now that registrant's own data, and silently changing someone's registry underneath them would be worse than leaving it alone.
In practice:
- Tag a product, and every registry created from then on picks up the behaviour.
- Remove the tag, and items added before you removed it keep behaving as they were.
If you need to change an existing item, the registrant can adjust it from their own registry management screen.
Gift cards
Shopify gift cards already behave as though both tags were applied, plus they get their own denomination picker at checkout. You do not need to tag them, and tagging them changes nothing.
Troubleshooting
The tag does not seem to do anything.
Check the casing first, and check for a stray space. listify: no-registry and Listify:no-registry are both treated as ordinary tags with no special meaning. Shopify shows the tag exactly as stored on the product page in your admin.
The button disappeared but the product still shows in a customer's registry. List filtering depends on the storefront having loaded that product's current details. Reloading the registry page resolves it.
A behaviour tag is not applying to an existing item. That is expected. Behaviour tags apply when a product is added, never retroactively. See the section above.
